The first CD adaptation of the masterpiece album “Komachi,” which sheds light on the lost mood of Japan and has received high praise both domestically and internationally, from Metron Records has been reissued for the first CD, and the analog edition that had been discontinued has been decided.
Myotei often finds the direction of his compositions in his impressions of Japan in the past, and he considers himself the owner of an old-fashioned spirit. While he was working on this album, he lost his beloved grandmother. He thought his grandmother, who died at age 99, was the last person to experience and understand the traditional Japanese atmosphere. The driving force behind his music and art is his desire to shed light on the times and aesthetics that he thinks will disappear from the collective consciousness of Japanese people with each passing generation, that is, the “lost Japanese mood.” Also, this work “Komachi” is an album dedicated to my late grandmother.
“Komachi,” which has memorable subtlety and an eternal sound far away, is full of white noise, intricate field recordings, and the hypnotic sound of flowing water. Although it has a modernity full of certainty like J-Dilla, the genealogy of “Komachi” can be traced back to the Ukiyo-e world of Ukiyo-e and gagaku through the prisms of Yokota Susumu and Takemura Nobukazu, who are pioneers of Japanese ambient music in the 80s and artists based on idyllic samples from the 90s.
Each of the 12 songs is composed as a diorama with individual sounds, and it is designed not only to evoke nostalgia, but also to explore the antonym between old and new in modern Japanese society. This pervasive story flows throughout, and it reminds me of works by Kawabata Yasunari and Natsume Soseki, artists who are similarly fascinated by the introspective serenity that permeates traditional Japanese family life, as well as films by Yasujiro Ozu and Hayao Miyazaki.
